When Rose Herrera, Councilmember for District 8, was a youth, she would spend many of her summer days swimming at various swimming pools in East San Jose.
But when she heard that the only swimming pool that would be available this summer to East San Jose residents would be the pool located at The Mayfair Community Center, she made it her mission to have more than one swimming pool available for her constituents.
“Summer is a time when people, especially children, can escape the heat and enjoy a day at the pool,” Herrera said. “That is why I found it unacceptable to have only one swimming pool in East San Jose open.”
Herrera teamed up with West Coast Aquatics and their efforts resulted in the opening  of a recreational swimming pool in Silver Creek High School.
“This is a perfect example of what can be accomplished when a community and a non profit work together,” Herrera said. “We made it our mission to make sure the swimming pool at Silver Creek High School would be open this summer.”
