Latinoamérica hace fuerza en el Mundial 2010
P

Special Olympics this weekend
By Cinthia Rodriguez ? El Observador

The ?Flame of Hope? torch made its way to San Jose before reaching its final destination this Monday, June 21, at the circle of palms in downtown San Jose.
The San Jose Police Department helped escort the torch during its time in San Jose on its way to the Special Olympics Northern California Summer Games at UC Davis. The Olympics will be held from June 25 to the 27. More than 500 law enforcement personnel participated in the annual fundraising campaign to support the games.
?I?m here on behalf of all the people in San Jose, all the folks that make this possible to help thousand of athletes compete, said Mayor Chuck Reed. ?I?m very proud of the competitors and everybody that makes this possible.?
The Special Olympics began June of 1962 with Eunice Kennedy Shriver, who started a summer day camp for children and adults with intellectual disabilities at her home in Maryland to explore the capabilities in a variety of sports and physical activities. The first games were held in Chicago in 1968 with 1,000 participants from 26 states.
Active police officers participated in the run along with a male and female Olympic participants, who held the torch. The quick stop in San Jose served as a reminder of the importance of the games and supporters were recognized. The fire department was present, as well as other community members that were ready to join the run and reach UC Davis.
Over 900 participants will be playing bocce, tennis, track and field, volleyball and participate in many other sporting events. Everyone is invited to attend the summer games.
